The workhorse of KVH’s single-axis Fiber Optic Gyro (FOG) series, KVH’s original DSP-3000 offers field proven performance in a wide range of applications. Its compact and robust design, coupled with a choice of analog, digital, and digital RS-232 outputs, makes the DSP-3000 the most versatile fiber optic gyro available and an ideal solution for guidance and stabilization, low-cost inertial measurement units (IMUs), integrated GPS/INS, and AHRS.

The DSP-3000 is built on a foundation of KVH’s mature all-fiber optical circuit, which ensures exceptionally low noise (ARW), insensitivity to cross-axis error, and shock and vibration robustness. Housed in a package roughly the same size as a deck of playing cards and available with a robust, modular design, the DSP-3000 makes low-cost inertial measurement units (IMUs), integrated GPS/INS, and AHRS a reality. Fabricated from KVH’s proprietary E•Core polarization-maintaining fiber, the KVH DSP-3000 series delivers superior precision and reliable performance at a lower cost than other comparable fiber optic and mechanical gyroscopes.

Can the DSP-3000 FOG be combined with GPS?

Yes, the DSP-3000 FOG makes integrated GPS/INS, AHRS, and inertial measurement units a reality.

What is the difference between the DSP-3000 and DSP-4000 fiber optic gyros (FOGs)?

The DSP-3000 family is a commercial-grade gyro. It was not designed specifically or adapted to military use. Further, no government funds were used in its development. Many of our designs are made robust with MIL STD specifications in mind but the DSP-3000 has not been tested or qualified to meet military standards.

The DSP-4000 is an example of a gyro with the same performance characteristics as the DSP-3000. In this case the gyro has been repackaged specifically for military end use and as such falls under Category XII (e) State Department Classification. It also has undergone military qualification testing.

How does E-Core PM fiber compare to PM fiber created using stress-induced birefringence?

The geometrical birefringence created by the elliptical core is the key to the E-Core fiber's outstanding polarization-maintaining abilities. Because of its design, it is able to maintain its polarization and low-loss characteristics when exposed to physical stresses and temperature-induced changes far better than PM fiber created using stress-induced birefringence. It is the E-Core fiber's stability that makes it an excellent choice for pigtailing optical components.

What enables E-Core PM fiber to maintain the polarization of light so well?

KVH's E-Core fiber offers a number of advantages, including high polarization maintaining ability (greater than 40 dB-m) and low sensitivity to stress and temperature. These features make E-Core fiber ideal for fiber splicing and pigtailing to other optical components in applications where preserving the state of light polarization is critical to the operation of the device.

The elliptically shaped core region within an E-Core fiber has a significantly higher index than the surrounding cladding, creating the geometrical birefringence necessary to maintain the polarization of the light within the fiber. The E-Core fibers are manufactured using high-grade silica materials and various high-purity dopants. A dual UV-cured acrylate coating is applied to standard fibers, thereby preventing moisture from penetrating the fiber, preserving its strength, and improving its handling characteristics.

DO KVH FOGs meet electromagnetic compatibility requirements?

All KVH FOG products meet the European Community Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive and are approved to display the CE mark. They have been tested for conformance to electromagnetic emissions and susceptibility requirements. The units also meet FCC Part 15.
