The Azimuth 1000 can also provide heading data for use with radars, autopilots, plotters, and PC software through its fast,10 Hz NMEA 0183 output port.

Q:
I have an Azimuth 1000 compass. The Owner's Manual states the power supply is 12 VDC. What is the actual allowable voltage range? Can I run the Azimuth 1000 off a 24 VDC system without damage?
A:

The Azimuth 1000 is a 12-volt unit. It will not work on a 24-volt system. Most 12-volt power supplies operate with a range of 11.5 and 13.5 volts. To avoid damage to the unit, keep the input power in this range.

Q:
The Azimuth 1000 display does not light up.
A:
Make sure that you have 12 VDC on the white wire.  If 12 VDC is running through the white wire and the display still will not light up, the unit will need to be returned to KVH for repair. Please contact KVH Technical Support at (401) 847-3327 or via e-mail at techs@kvh.com for a Return Materials Authorization (RMA) number.

Azimuth 1000 has missing or dim segments in its display.
A:
If the Azimuth 1000 has missing or dim segments in its display, the unit will need to be returned to KVH for repair. Please contact KVH Technical Support at (401) 847-3327 or via e-mail at techs@kvh.com.

Q:
Can a fluxgate compass show True North?
A:
Since fluxgate compasses are magnetic compasses, they can only reference the earth's magnetic field. They can not reference the earth's inertia and therefore cannot be made to know True North.

If you wish to navigate in true heading, you have a couple of options. KVH's Azimuth 1000, Azimuth 314AC, GyroTrac, and Sailcomp 103AC allow you to enter an offset angle. This means that you can enter your local variation value (either positive or negative) and the compass display will show true rather than magnetic heading. When your variation changes because you have traveled a significant distance, however, that offset angle will not update automatically. You must update it manually.

The GyroTrac can also interface with a vessel's GPS, allowing the compass to learn the variation from the GPS. With this option, your GyroTrac will give true heading and will automatically update to the correct variation.
