The New Article, Available at No Cost, Follows TV Star Lisa Whelchel and Her Family During a 1-year Tour of America by RV
MIDDLETOWN, RI – December 13, 2001 – In the summer of 2001, TV star Lisa Whelchel, who portrayed Blair on “The Facts of Life” during its nine-year run on NBC, embarked with her husband and three children on a 1-year tour of the United States in their motorhome. Intrigued by the fact that the family was using its KVH TracVision in-motion satellite TV system as a means of home schooling as well as entertainment during this journey, KVH Industries (Nasdaq: KVHI) asked freelance writer Brad Johnson to spend some time talking to and visiting with Lisa and her family. The resulting article presents an entertaining and honest perspective of life on the road for a family of 5 in a 40-foot motorcoach – the humor, the challenges, the minor disasters that are only funny in retrospect, and the unforgettable experiences that can only be gained while seeing the United States by traveling the highways and back roads with your family.

An Excerpt from “Lisa Whelchel Takes Her Family Dream on the Road”:
For Lisa Whelchel, who appeared as Blair on the NBC show “The Facts of Life” during its nine-year run, and her husband, Steve Cauble, and children Tucker, 11, Haven, 10, and Clancy, 9, the dream to circle the country has turned into a total immersion in the flavors and colors of America. Red-white-and-blue towns, from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, to Butte, Montana. Regional spice, from Salem, Oregon, to Celebration, Florida. Cities as broad and bustling as America: New York, Nashville, Atlanta, Seattle. A sprawling natural landscape, from the country’s great national parks to leafy back roads. And along the way Lisa Whelchel and family discovered another American treasure: What it’s like to share an adventure together.
Maybe the inspiration came from the old Chevrolet jingle that had implanted itself into the consciousness of Lisa and Steve and every Baby Boomer: “See the USA / In your Chev-Ro-Let.” Maybe it was the fact that, with busy schedules, there never seemed to be enough time to live life as a family. The seeds of the dream sprouted when Lisa, who’d left an acting and theatrical career for that of stay-at-home, home-schooling mom, and Steve, who’d done plenty of traveling before raising a family, decided to give their kids the kind of education they’d never get from a standard curriculum. “We plan to live a dream for our family,” Lisa explains. “And as we share our plan with others they invariably respond, ‘Oh, we’ve always dreamed of doing something like that!’ Sadly, in this day and age it usually remains a dream. We want to make our dream come true and encourage others to do the same.”
