MIDDLETOWN, R.I., May 10, 2002 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ --
TV Star Lisa Whelchel and Family have One of the First TracNet Systems Installed Aboard their RV
The full power of the Internet is now available on the move for mariners, travelers, businesspeople, and public and emergency services thanks to the TracNet(TM) Mobile Internet Server, available exclusively from KVH Industries (Nasdaq: KVHI). After being introduced in late 2001, the TracNet system is now in production and being installed aboard vehicles and vessels throughout the United States. For the first time, high-speed Internet access is available on the move as TracNet receives Internet downloads at speeds reaching 400 kilobits per second (Kbps) via the same award-winning TracVision(R) antennas used to receive satellite TV entertainment.
"The response to TracNet has been outstanding," declared Ian Palmer, vice president of satellite sales. "The intense interest among our customers and advance sales in both the marine and land mobile markets illustrate both the tremendous demand for mobile high-speed Internet access and the viability of the TracNet approach. We are extremely pleased that this versatile system is now being shipped to our dealers and customers nationwide."
TracNet consists of the server and multiple integrated return paths for complete two-way Internet access. The high-powered mobile DirecPC(R) downloads are received by a KVH TracVision mobile satellite TV antenna, which relays the data to the TracNet server. Two-way, high-speed access to Internet data is available to laptops and PCs either through TracNet's 10/100BaseT Ethernet connection or the integrated 802.11b wireless network, which permits multiple users to surf the web at any time from virtually anywhere in or around the vehicle or vessel. Requests for additional data, outgoing e-mail, and other information are relayed to DirecPC through TracNet's return path, which includes a landline connection for use while parked or docked and a wireless satellite/cellular system for use while the vehicle or vessel is on the move.
One of the first customers to receive a TracNet is TV star Lisa Whelchel, who portrayed Blair on "The Facts of Life" during its nine-year run on NBC. Lisa, along with her husband, Steve Cauble, and their three children, Tucker, Haven, and Clancy, are in the final stages of a 1-year tour of the United States in their motorhome. As part of the trip, Lisa and Steve are posting daily journal entries on their web site, www.LisaWhelchel.com, to keep friends, family, and fans up to date on the family's latest adventures. They are also using a KVH TracVision in-motion satellite TV system as a means of home schooling as well as entertainment during the journey. With their motorhome now equipped with the first production TracNet system as well as the family's existing wireless network and laptop computers, Lisa, Steve, and the kids have a new degree of freedom and an on-the-move connection to the world.
"I can't begin to tell you how excited all of us are, especially Lisa and me since we are the ones that must constantly find a telephone connection to send the journal entries and get our e-mail!" remarked Steve. "The system works wonderfully well, and we are all enjoying 'on demand' Internet and e- mail as a result."
The family's continuing travels offer an outstanding opportunity to demonstrate TracNet's capabilities throughout the United States. "We have a lot of traveling yet to do before we get home (California) on July 1st," explained Steve. "KVH is certainly a leader in this area and we are very pleased and thankful to be partnering with them in this endeavor."
