KVH Donates DataScope Digital Compass to Help Raise Funds at Library’s Silent Auction
MIDDLETOWN, RI – June 9, 2005 – KVH Industries, Inc., (Nasdaq: KVHI) is proud to support the Newport Public Library’s annual fundraiser and auction, this year entitled, “High Tech Meets Hard Copy.” The event, which will be held on Sunday, June 12, 2005, will raise money to support the library’s technological resources. Martin Kits van Heyningen, president and chief executive officer of Middletown, RI-based KVH Industries, and his wife Kathleen, creative director at KVH, are serving as honorary co-chairpersons for the event. In addition, KVH is donating a DataScope® handheld digital compass to the library for its fundraising auction.
“When the Internet first emerged, people generally thought that it would signal the end of libraries, but that has not happened. The library is still one of our most valuable local resources,” said Mr. Kits van Heyningen. “As the president of a technology company, I am well aware that education is critical to success in anything. Half of the households in Rhode Island do not have home computers or access to the Internet. Libraries offer everyone in our community access not only to the Internet but also to a tremendous array of literature and resources. I am proud to participate in this effort and to have KVH Industries support the Newport Public Library and this event.”
The Newport Public Library, founded in 1869, serves the Newport community by offering access to a collection of more than 130,000 items on site as well as 4.1 million items statewide through the Cooperating Libraries Automated Network, the membership of which includes all public libraries in the state. More than 200,000 patron visits are made to the library each year to borrow books, attend programs, and use the computers, databases and other resources the library makes available.
“The Newport Public Library is very pleased that Mr. and Mrs. Kits van Heyningen are Honorary Co-chairs of our ‘High Tech Meets Hard Copy’ event,” remarked Regina Slezak, director of the Newport Public Library. “Their connection with cutting-edge communications technology makes that role most appropriate. Technology has brought about major changes in the way information is communicated and has had a major impact on the way libraries provide service.”
The “High Tech Meets Hard Copy” event will feature an online auction, with bidding taking place in the library’s computer room. Those who wish to participate, but cannot attend the event, can log onto www.newportlibraryri.org to view the auction items and to place their bid. Bidding will close at 6:15 p.m. on Sunday June 12, 2005.
