Satellite TV Comes Out of the Caddy Shack and onto High-end Golf Carts

It’s No Joke – Leading Vehicle Converters are Designing “Ultimate Golf Carts” Equipped with KVH’s TracVision A7 to Receive DIRECTV When on the Links

MIDDLETOWN, RI – October 11, 2007 –Young golf fans who watched 1980’s hit film, “Caddyshack” couldn’t help but envy Rodney Dangerfield’s golf bag features – a stereo, a phone, a remote controlled club launcher, a beer tap, a putter “designed by Albert Einstein”, and a television. Now, 27 years later, successful boomers are realizing their childhood fantasies, as top golfers, celebrities, and weekend golfers who want a bit extra are outfitting their “ultimate golf carts” that would make even Judge Smail envious. These tricked-out golf carts offer all the comforts of home, including the TracVision A7 in-motion satellite TV system from KVH Industries and crystal-clear DIRECTV programming.

The Eighth Annual Michael Douglas and Friends Presented by Lexus celebrity golf event featured what may have been the very first golf cart equipped with TracVision. The vehicle was designed by a celebrity in his own right, “Mad Mike” of MTV’s “Pimp My Ride.” In addition to its KVH satellite antenna, the golf cart featured a mobile tablet PC in the steering wheel, custom golf ball washer, shoe polisher, and custom paint and upholstery.

“TracVision is the coolest thing ever to put on a golf cart,” says “Mad Mike,” a 20-year veteran of the auto customization business. “We made a metal roll cage to support the antenna, so everything still looks factory but it’s much stronger and really safe. It’s something you gotta have. Satellite TV is definitely the new bling-bling on the golf course.”

Scott Cairncross of La Jolla Audio, Inc. (, in San Diego, CA, created a custom Club Car golf cart for one of the world’s top golfers just a few months ago. He had no idea that this one novelty vehicle, a surprise gift from the golfer’s wife, would lead to several more orders for custom Club Cars equipped with TracVision A7 mobile satellite TV antennas.

“I think this is a wide-open market,” says Cairncross of the opportunity to install satellite TV antennas on golf carts. While the custom installation required some creative techniques – most notably, creating extra supports for the plastic roof, so that it would support the sleek, 45 lb. antenna – this was an exciting and profitable project for Cairncross and his colleagues at La Jolla Audio. He points out that they can fit two golf carts in their shop at a time, but the same space would be occupied by just one SUV. “The idea of putting TracVision on golf carts is one of the most creative things we’ve seen done with our systems, and we’re excited to help the trend grow,” says Ben Bettelli, KVH’s western regional sales manager for automotive products. “While we designed the TracVision A7 for use on SUVs, vans and other vehicles, innovators like Mad Mike and La Jolla Audio are applying our award-winning satellite TV technology to a whole new level of on-the-go applications. Mike and Scott have opened a whole new market for us, and we look forward to supplying our new customers with the very best satellite TV for their tricked-out golf carts.”

According to Cairncross, word got out about his first custom golf cart with TracVision, and has led to orders for at least four more similar vehicles, and a deal with a local Club Car distributor to perform many entertainment upgrades on new golf carts from the factory. “Creating a high-end golf cart used to mean installing some carpet, a radio, and maybe a faux-wood dashboard,” he says. “We’re taking it to the next level.”
