First European yachts equipped with groundbreaking new 60 cm TracPhone V7 with mini-VSAT Broadband service
London, UK – January 11, 2008 – Solidifying its position as an international leader in maritime broadband, KVH Europe A/S today announced that its groundbreaking TracPhone® V7 with mini-VSAT Broadband™ service is available in Europe. With its small size, fast, reliable downloads, and affordable hardware and airtime, this new system and service from KVH offer satellite communications to a greater variety of yachts than legacy 1-meter VSAT systems. Boaters across Europe will soon have access to the unique new satellite communications system and service that have already taken off in North American waters.
The new mini-VSAT Broadband service uses sophisticated spread spectrum technology to provide yachts with data reception rates as fast as 2 Mbps and data transmission rates as fast as 512 Kbps via the 60 cm TracPhone V7. The mini-VSAT Broadband service is fast, “always on”, and available in a variety of “fixed monthly price” plans or “per-megabyte” plans with pricing up to 90% less per megabyte than existing maritime data services.
Mads Bjerre-Petersen, Managing Director of KVH Europe A/S, offers some exciting details about this new system: “The TracPhone V7 is revolutionising satellite communications for leisure and commercial vessels thanks to its small size, easy installation, and affordable service. This system, with a dome only 68 cm high and weighing just 27 kg, brings highly sophisticated satellite communications to vessels that were previously unable to use them due to size or budgetary restrictions. We are extremely excited that the first TracPhone V7 systems have now been installed and activated in Europe.”
The system is changing perceptions about satellite communications on the water. “Traditionally, VSAT has been the domain of the larger motor yacht and commercial ships but we believe that with the advent of this smaller, more economical VSAT terminal, the communications market now has more solutions to meet most users’ requirements and budgets,” said Mark Wilson of Navicomm Marine Systems, which recently installed a TracPhone V7 on a 54 m Perini Navi yacht.
“This is what broadband at sea was meant to be,” explained Bjerre-Petersen. “TracPhone V7 offers a ‘cable modem’ experience at sea, allowing us to provide broadband services to commercial, government, and leisure vessels that previously were unable to support broadband at sea due to high costs or their inability to accommodate large, 1-meter antennas. The seamless combination of TracPhone V7 and mini-VSAT Broadband service eliminates installation issues related to those larger antennas while reducing the cost and significantly improving the performance. The TracPhone V7 hardware and the mini-VSAT Broadband service represent the first end-to-end hardware, service, and support package available for maritime communications.”
Key features of the TracPhone V7 and mini-VSAT Broadband service include:
- True broadband connections at sea with data rates as fast as 512 Kbps (maximum upload) and 2 Mbps (maximum download)
- Commercial-grade, 60 cm antenna that is 85% smaller by volume and 75% lighter than those used in existing 1-meter VSAT systems, making it practical for use aboard smaller vessels
- Voice over IP telephone service with multiple, simultaneous lines
- Integrated hardware, service, activation, and support for simple installation and operation
