Scholarship renamed for the late Arent Kits van Heyningen and awarded to Mersina Simanski of Middletown High School
MIDDLETOWN, RI – July 13, 2011 – KVH Industries, Inc., (Nasdaq: KVHI) is pleased to name Miss Mersina Simanski of Middletown, RI, as the recipient of its 2011 Arent Kits van Heyningen Technology Scholarship. Miss Simanski, a graduate of Middletown High School, will begin her civil and environmental engineering studies at Stanford University in the fall of 2011. She is the most recent recipient of the $1,000 scholarship, which is awarded annually to a deserving Aquidneck Island high school senior attending a 4-year engineering or math program beginning the following fall.
This year, the scholarship was renamed in honor of Mr. Arent Kits van Heyningen, KVH’s late cofounder, Chairman Emeritus, and chief scientist, who played an integral part in choosing KVH’s first three technology scholars before his passing in May 2011.
“It’s a pleasure to welcome Miss Simanski to the ranks of KVH Technology Scholars, particularly as we rename the scholarship for Mr. Arent Kits van Heyningen, whose dedication to innovation and excellence in engineering is at the heart of the award. Miss Simanski is clearly deserving of this award based on her outstanding academic record as well as other activities, including leadership of the Middletown High School science club, star performance on the MHS math league team, organizing a shoe and book drive to benefit needy children in Belize, afterschool and weekend time spent engaging in activities with special needs students as part of the Best Buddies Club, and playing on the MHS basketball team, just to name a few,” explained Chris Watson, KVH’s director of marketing. “The Arent Kits van Heyningen Technology Scholarship program recognizes the vital role that engineering and mathematics play in our local and national economies, our country’s future as a technological leader, and the success of companies like KVH. On behalf of everyone at KVH, I want to congratulate Miss Simanski and wish her great success in the future as she pursues her passion for engineering.”
