A:
The compass is calibrated at the factory in a computer-controlled calibration facility known as a 'Helmholtz Cage' and will operate without further field calibration. However, if the compass is mounted near a source of magnetic deviation, a field calibration will help ensure that the compass is as accurate as possible.
A:

The typical accuracy of the C100 compass engine after calibration is ± 0.5 degrees.

A:
To calibrate the compass, the platform to which the compass is mounted must be rotated 360 degrees. This allows the compass engine to measure the effect (or anomalies) on the earth's magnetic field produced by hard or soft iron of the host platform. The compass engine then calculates correction factors for those disturbances. Most other compasses cannot resolve the distortions produced by soft iron.
A:

The C100 compass engine will operate as far as 80 degrees north or south magnetic latitude. This limit is the result of the three-dimensional nature of the earth's magentic vector. Once you proceed higher than 80 degrees north or south, the vertical component of the vector starts to become greater than the horizontal and the compass will be unable to operate correctly.

A:
While tilt can affect other compasses, the C100 compass engine (as well as KVH's other compass products) is designed to overcome the effects of tilt.

The magnetic vector has a vertical as well as horizontal component. Any uncompensated tilt will result in 3 degrees error for each degree of tilt (at 70 degrees magnetic dip angle). KVH compasses negate this effect by utilizing a floating ringcore that always remains horizontal with respect to the earth.
A:
Yes, the C100 Compass Engine is definitely suitable for use on aerial platforms. In fact, it has been used in a number of aeronautical applications, including aboard helicopters and autonomous unmanned vehicles. The accuracy of the C100 is specified at +/-.5 degrees. The C100 will also maintain its heading accuracy at as much as 16 deg of tilt.

Data rates up to 10 Hz are available using the KVH C100 compass engine.

A:
Strap-down sensors are fixed rather than floating. Typically they measure the magnetic vector in three dimensions (x,y,z). Unfortunately, they must be perfectly level or incorporate a very costly vertical reference to be accurate.

3-D strap-down sensors also require a very complex manual procedure and even more complex set of calculations to solve the local magnetic disturbance problem. The floating ring core mechanically reduces a 3-D problem to two dimensions (x and y - the horizontal components of the vector, i.e., a circle) while a 3-D strap-down sensor must solve the distortions of x, y, and z (i.e., a spherical body).
A:
The C100 has a current drain of 25 mA.
