Emergency Responders Rely on KVH for Critical Information via Satellite TV

TracVision Satellite TV Systems Link Homeland Defense Agencies to Real-time News While on the Move and at Disaster Sites

MIDDLETOWN, R.I., Dec. 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Real-time, accurate information can mean the difference between life and death in the efforts of emergency management agencies across the country. Satellite services delivered by mobile antennas manufactured by KVH Industries (Nasdaq: KVHI) provide a powerful tool for bringing that information directly to the teams that need it in the field. Live news coverage and weather reports, high-speed Internet, and voice/fax communications via satellite provide the real-time situational awareness necessary to help law enforcement, rescue, and emergency personnel make the best decisions in an emergency, increasing response time and helping ensure that emergency responders take the appropriate actions.

The Hunterdon County, New Jersey, Emergency Management Department is one of the many local, state, and federal organizations that depend upon mobile satellite systems from KVH for that critical link to the information vital to a rapid and effective response.

"Our satellite TV system supplies us with quite of bit of information," explained Harry Shepherd, the Director of Homeland Security and Coordinator for Emergency Management in Hunterdon County. "On September 11, 2001, we were stationed at Liberty State Park, awaiting word on the number of casualties we might be seeing and a possible HAZMAT [hazardous materials] response. Information from the authorities was very sketchy. Most of our information that day was coming from TV."

The Hunterdon County Mobile Command Center is equipped with an array of electronic systems designed to provide complete command and control of resources responding to a crisis, whether on a local or regional scale. Among these systems is a KVH TracVision mobile satellite TV antenna. Protected under a durable dome, TracVision offers fully automatic tracking and reception of satellite television and audio services from DIRECTV, the DISH Network, or other high-powered DVB-compatible satellite systems worldwide while the vehicle is both in motion and parked.

"Satellite TV gives us a constant update of information," Shepherd concluded. "When news helicopters are flying over an emergency scene, we can get a wider view of the site live on TV. It's not something you use every time you go out on an emergency call but when you need it, nothing else can do the job."

"We are gratified that KVH's mobile satellite systems are helping emergency responders nationwide assess and react appropriately to the life- and-death crises that they face while serving our communities," said Martin Kits van Heyningen, president and CEO of KVH Industries. "Satellite services offer unmatched versatility and scope with coverage and real-time information available nationwide and in our coastal waters. In addition to the entertainment value that has made our products the leader in both the marine and land mobile consumer markets, we are now seeing the value to emergency and law enforcement agencies throughout the United States, including the U.S. Coast Guard, FBI, and Federal Emergency Management Agency, as well as regional and international airports, and emergency management teams, like those in Hunterdon County. We at KVH are very proud to be providing the tools that help these organizations carry out their mission."

In addition to the TracVision line of mobile satellite TV systems, KVH Industries offers an array of mobile satellite communications equipment ideal for use by emergency responders and law enforcement. The TracNet 2.0 Mobile High-speed Internet System provides two-way, high-speed connections to the Internet throughout North America even when the vehicle is underway. Using the system, emergency teams can have complete access to the Internet or on- line emergency networks with download speeds as fast as 400 Kbps. At the same time, the KVH Tracphone 252 satellite telephone offers outstanding mobile voice, fax, and data service using the Inmarsat mini-M satellite system, eliminating issues of spotty cellular phone or long-range radio coverage. Together, the KVH TracVision, TracNet, and Tracphone systems create a versatile mobile communication center suitable for the most demanding applications.
