Cybersecurity

simple. secure. always connected.

Protect Your Business from Disruption

Connectivity exposes every vessel to cyber risk, not just large fleets. KVH delivers protection built for vessels with continuous monitoring, endpoint and network defenses, controlled vendor access, and incident response support. Reduce risk without adding workload to your crew or IT team.

What creates cybersecurity risk is unmanaged access, inconsistent protections, and limited visibility across remote vessels. That’s why cybersecurity must be managed continuously to reduce pressure on IT teams while delivering consistent, effective protection.

Every vessel is connected.
Every vessel is exposed.

What You Gain

  • Consistent security posture across vessels
  • Reduced burden on crews through silent protections
  • Fewer emergency responses due to early detection and containment
  • Safer operations with less anxiety for crews and leadership
  • Confidence that protection is working even when bandwidth is tight
  • Reassurance that when something does go wrong, you’re not facing it alone.

What We Deliver

  • 24/7 monitoring with alerts tuned for maritime links
  • Detection of suspicious behavior and unauthorized access
  • Endpoint and network protection built for vessel environments
  • Controlled, monitored vendor access limited only to what is needed
  • Segmentation and USB controls to reduce human error risk
  • Playbooks, backup validation, and recovery assistance

Cybersecurity is essential, but it becomes even more effective when your IT foundation is standardized and stable. Managed IT reduces chaos and makes cyber protection easier to enforce, while Compliance ensures you can demonstrate readiness and alignment with confidence.

KVH Managed Cybersecurity FAQs

KVH Managed Cybersecurity includes managed firewall and threat protection, vulnerability monitoring and response, endpoint detection and response (XDR/MDR), IPS/IDS, DNS filtering, security assessments, software and firmware patching, and Security Operations Center (SOC) coverage. These services are designed specifically for the maritime threat environment.

Vessels operate in isolated environments with limited IT resources, often run on legacy operational technology (OT) systems not designed with security in mind, and connect to satellite and cellular networks that can be intercepted or spoofed. Additionally, crew turnover and the use of personal devices create persistent endpoint risks. These factors make maritime an attractive and often under-defended target.

A managed firewall is an enterprise-grade network security system that monitors and controls all incoming and outgoing traffic based on security rules, actively managed by a security team rather than left to self-configure. For vessels, a managed firewall protects the onboard network from unauthorized access, blocks malicious traffic, and enforces crew Internet usage policies. KVH’s managed firewall service is powered by Fortinet technology.

Extended Detection and Response (XDR) refers to the technology platform that correlates data across endpoints, networks, and other sources to detect threats. Managed Detection and Response (MDR) adds the human layer: KVH security analysts actively monitoring, investigating, and responding to alerts generated by XDR tools. KVH provides both as part of its cybersecurity service.

KVH’s Security Operations Center (SOC) continuously monitors fleet security events, regardless of vessel location or time zone. When a threat is detected, SOC analysts investigate and initiate response actions, coordinating with the vessel or shore-side team as needed. This 24/7 coverage eliminates the need for fleet operators to staff their own security monitoring function.

Yes. IMO Resolution MSC.428(98) requires vessel operators to integrate cyber risk management into their Safety Management System. KVH Managed Cybersecurity provides the technical controls that form the foundation of a defensible IMO 2021 compliance posture, including managed firewall, vulnerability monitoring, endpoint protection, and patching. KVH’s Compliance services further support documentation, policies, and audit readiness, and can help achieve IACS UR E26 cyber resilience requirements for newbuild vessels.

DNS filtering blocks access to known malicious websites before a connection is ever established, including phishing pages, malware distribution sites, and command-and-control servers. For vessels where crew and operational devices share the same network, DNS filtering is a fast, low-friction protection layer that reduces risk significantly.

KVH’s cybersecurity incident response team is available to support fleets that suspect a cyberattack. Our SOC analysts work to identify the scope and nature of the incident, initiate containment measures, and coordinate remediation with the goal of minimizing disruption and recovery time. Incident activity is tracked and documented through the Managed Services portal.
